Top 5 Must Do Attractions at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is unlike any other of the WDW parks. It’s almost 5x the size of Magic Kingdom and it definitely feels that way when you trekking from one attraction to the next. It can be tough to navigate, especially for someone like me who struggles with their sense of direction (and I’ve been there dozens of times!).

That being said, some of the best attractions at WDW can be found at Animal Kingdom. It’s worth a visit if you can squeeze it in to your vacation.  I’ve pulled together our family’s top 5 must do attractions that we make sure to hit every time…

5. Kilimanjaro Safaris

Hop in a safari jeep as you’re whisked away to the serengeti! This family-friendly ride is so much cooler than seeing animals at the zoo. We were able to ride the safari twice this past August, and both times were unbelievable. We saw SO many animals – they were all out and about, and the giraffes even got close to our jeep! Morning is the better time to ride than the afternoon since the animals are more active, but now Animal Kingdom offers night safaris which we hopefully will be able to do soon!

4. Festival of the Lion King

Who doesn’t love the Lion King?! This Broadway-esque stage show is one of the best shows in all of WDW. The talent is always unbelievable but unlike a Broadway show, it’s interactive. Sing along to all of your favorite music from the movie while the kids get to join in a parade with the performers. I hadn’t gone to this one in a few years, but when we went this past summer, it was better than I remembered. It’s a good break from the heat, too, if you’re going in the summer.

3. Dinosaur

The ride Dinosaur is one of WDW’s hidden gems and one of the most “quotable” rides. Without being a coaster, it’s still a thrill rides with lots of sharp turns, drops, and startling moments – and it’s in the dark. Dr. Grant Seeker sends you back to the time of the dinosaurs in a time rover. Your task is to rescue an Iguanadon before the meteor strikes and wipes out all dinosaurs.  I honestly could ride this one over and over again without getting sick of it, and best of all there’s usually a short wait!

2. Expedition Everest

If you like roller coasters, you don’t want to miss this awesome ride. As Disney does best, the theming for this ride is one of my favorites. This coaster takes you on a speeding train through the Himalayan mountains – just watch out for the monster of the Forbidden Mountain. There’s nothing better than screaming “THE YETI” at the top of your lungs as you hurl past the lunging Abominable Snowman.

1. Avatar Flight of Passage

This new thrill ride blew our minds this past August. We’d all seen the movie Avatar (highly recommend watching it before riding this), and the ride truly transports you directly into Pandora. I was lucky enough to ride it several times (see how we did it in the blog post “Ride Review: Flight of Passage”) and am already looking forward to riding it again.

Product Review: Little Treasure Packs

Trendy handmade fanny packs for kids and adults

1995.

When I was a little girl, the first fanny pack I ever owned was a Minnie Mouse one and I LOVED it. It looked like Minnie was giving me a hug when I wore it. That was the last time I wore a fanny pack…

Until 2018.

Flash forward to summer 2018. My mom, sisters and I stumbled across this adorable Etsy shop called Little Treasure Packs. We were looking for cute, matching Disney apparel for our upcoming trip to the Happiest Place on Earth.

The fanny packs we found in the Little Treasure Packs’ Etsy shop were the cutest fanny packs I’d seen since my Minnie Mouse days. There were tons of different Disney-inspired patterns – everything from Moana to Toy Story to Star Wars to Mickey Ear Hats. One was just better than the next!

We finally settled on the Classic Mickey Mouse ones and ordered four so we could match on our vacation (we’re a big matching t-shirt family when we’re in WDW, but this was taking the matching to a new level). My sisters and I proudly wore our new fanny packs to the parks, and I’ve got to say they were not only quite the fashion statement, but an incredibly practical purchase.

I loved not having a purse in the parks. I didn’t have to sling it on and off for rides or pictures – the fanny pack stayed on easily and was super comfy to wear. Not to mention we got a ton of compliments from other guests and cast members!

Fanny packs are IN right now, so why not make it a Disney-inspired one? Click the link below to check out the Little Treasure Pack shop on Etsy.

How to Do Epcot “Right”

Personally, I LOVE Epcot. My appreciation of the park has grown as I’ve gotten older, and there are tons of awesome things to do for adults and kids. In addition to several huge festivals and events throughout the year, delicious restaurants in World Showcase, and some of the best live entertainment around (hello, British Revolution!), Epcot has some great rides too (see “Top 5 Must Do Rides at Epcot”).

If possible on your trip, break up your time at Epcot. Spend one morning there to do the rides and attractions, and then go back another night for drinks, dinner and the fireworks show, Illuminations (hurry before it leaves late summer 2019!). Day and night at all of the parks are totally different, especially at Epcot, and it’s worth it to visit at both times of day.

Morning at Epcot

Get there one morning right at park opening, or like us show up about 30 minutes before, hoping they’ll let you in early (which they usually do). If you’re coming in the side entrance (over by the UK & France), the lines tend to be shorter and quicker to get through. You can come in that entrance if you’re staying at the Beach Club, Yacht Club, Boardwalk, or Swan and Dolphin. Soon the Disney gondolas will open, linking that side entrance to a few other resorts – stay tuned for more info! If you’re coming in the main entrance, definitely give yourself some time, as this is where the majority of guests enter.

Use your morning to hit the big attractions – hopefully you have a few Fast Pass+ selections for them! Head straight to whatever ride youdon’t have a Fast Pass+ for if you want to do all of the biggies. Or, sometimes we like to ride our favorite ride (Soarin’) twice. We’ll run to Soarin’ right away, ride it once in the regular line (there isn’t much of a line if you beat the rush), and then ride it a second time using our Fast Pass+. Our family likes to do the rides, stay for lunch (Via Napoli in Italy has the best pizza), and then head back and hit the pool in the afternoon! You’re in and out of Epcot in a few hours.

Night at Epcot

Epcot at nighttime is one of my favorite things to do in all of WDW. Make a dinner reservation at one of the many delicious countries in the World Showcase (we love Mexico, Germany and France). Depending on what time your reservation is, head over early so you have time to walk around and enjoy the sites and sounds in the countries. There is a TON of great live music and entertainment, so be sure to check the schedule since performances are quick (but usually run every hour).

My perfect night in Epcot would be to head to the United Kingdom first. I love this area – Rose n Crown pub has great drinks, and the shops are so fun to walk around. And be sure to get a picture in the iconic red telephone booths! We usually get a beer and head to the back to listen to the greatest band of all time, British Revolution (okay, I’m biased). Then we’ll meander over to Mexico to the San Angel Inn for dinner inside the pyramid. After dinner, we hang around to enjoy Illuminations before we walk back to the Beach Club.

Helpful hint: if you’re leaving out the main entrance, be sure to watch Illuminations over on that side of the lagoon so you don’t get stuck behind the massive crowds leaving when the show is over.

Slow down and take in the sites and sounds of Epcot – you never know what magic you’ll stumble across!
